After many months of hard work, liaising and influencing key stakeholders, meeting with the team, like minded organisations, influential champions and opinion formers, ACDA have made a fantastic achievement.
An amendment raised by Lord Lester and Lord Harries of Pentregarth was adopted in Parliament and the Equality Bill containing this it received Royal Assent on the 8th April 2010. It is testament to the persistence and tenacity of all the stakeholder organisations and the unity they displayed, that this was made possible.
The Act now gives the Minister powers to introduce secondary legislation through Parliament when evidence of caste discrimination is found.
But there is much work still to be done. If you are aware of any instance of caste discrimination which has occurred in the areas covered by the Act i.e. employment, education and the Provision of Goods and Services, then please contact us as we wish to help.
We will handle all such cases with respect, sensitivity and ensure privacy of personal details as required by the Data Protection Act. Please contact Pashori Lal, Chair ACDA, on 07966 694 349, to discuss this further.
